The Self Employed Women's Association, formed in 1972, is a national trade union in India of women workers in the informal economy. As of 2004, approximately 700,000 women from over 80 trade groups are members. In 1974, SEWA members initiated the formation of a cooperative bank, Shri Mahila SEWA Sahakari Bank Ltd. (SEWA Bank) to fulfill the unmet financial needs (savings, credit, and financial counseling) of poor women. The bank has grown substantially since 1974 and has 2,56,617 accounts as of 2003-2004. In 2004, SEWA Bank's leadership sought to update their information on the economic conditions of SEWA Bank clients and their households. This study - 'Members' Work: A Socio-Economic Analysis of SEWA Bank Clients and their Trades' - was designed to provide analytical descriptions of the women's trades and events in their lives that impose financial hardships on their families. The loan officers use such information to contextualize their discussions with potential loan clients. For this purpose, 155 women in 16 trades were surveyed.
