The Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) started working for adolescent girls at the demand of its members. During different meetings held at SEWA, these members conveyed that their daughters wanted to learn to use computers. Around the same time at the end of 20th century, they also demanded some activities for their girls aged 8 to 10 years. As a result, SEWA Academy has started different programmes for girls aged 8 to 18. These activities include the publication of monthly magazine, Akashagnaga, for girls aged 8-15. In response to the demand of its members, SEWA Academy started computer literacy classes in the year 2004, which gradually became an integrated programme for the development of adolescent girls. The computer training programme includes basic English and 16 life skill training courses. Awakened to their needs, rights, and potentials, the girls demanded a vocational training programme which was started in 2008 through Kaushalya Kendra Skill Training Centers.
